Florida Felon Dana Hunter Calley Guilty of Gun Possession, Silencers
Orlando, Florida – In a shocking verdict, a federal jury has found Dana Hunter Calley, a 54-year-old Cocoa resident, guilty of possessing a firearm and ammunition as a convicted felon and possessing unregistered silencers. The guilty verdict sends a clear message to the streets of Florida: we won’t tolerate gun-wielding felons.
According to the evidence presented at trial, law enforcement executed two search warrants on Calley’s residence, seizing a total of 10 guns, 9 silencers, and thousands of rounds of ammunition. The first search warrant was executed on September 20, 2023, and the second on April 5, 2024. At the time of the offenses, Calley had multiple prior felony convictions, including aggravated battery and possessing contraband in a prison facility. As a convicted felon, Calley is prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition under federal law.
As the investigation unfolded, authorities discovered that Calley was not only in possession of multiple firearms, but also six silencers at various stages of production. The sheer amount of illicit firearms and silencers found at Calley’s residence paints a disturbing picture of a man who disregarded the law and put his community at risk.
US Attorney Roger B. Handberg announced the guilty verdict, stating that Calley’s actions were a threat to public safety. “As a convicted felon, Dana Hunter Calley was prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition under federal law. His reckless disregard for the law and his community’s safety is appalling, and we will do everything in our power to ensure he faces the maximum penalty for his crimes.”
Calley faces a maximum penalty of 35 years in federal prison. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for September 9, 2024. The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through community-based initiatives and targeted enforcement.
The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Diane Hu and Special Assistant United States Attorney Matthew Del Mastro prosecuted the case.
This case serves as a stark reminder that the streets of Florida will not tolerate gun-wielding felons. We will continue to work tirelessly to keep our communities safe and bring those who disregard the law to justice.
