David Alan Miles, 31, of Perry, Florida, has pleaded guilty in federal court to the serious charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. This admission comes after a high-speed pursuit and a series of deceptions that ended with Miles’ arrest.
Miles, a seven-time convicted felon with a history of federal prison time for offenses including possession of an unregistered short-barreled shotgun and sale of a firearm to a convicted felon, was caught by law enforcement on February 7, 2025. Initially attempting to evade police in a high-speed chase, Miles then attempted to pass himself off as the victim of a carjacking. It wasn’t until a canine team from Taylor Correctional Institution tracked him down that his true identity and criminal intent were revealed.
According to court documents, Miles confessed to officers that he had fled from the traffic stop because he possessed a rifle in the vehicle, which he knew was against the law for him to have. The plea was welcomed by John P. Heekin, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida, who praised the collaborative efforts of state, local, and federal agencies in making the community safer.
U.S. Attorney Heekin commented, ‘I applaud the excellent work of all involved to remove this dangerous individual from our streets.’ Miles faces a potential sentence of up to 15 years in prison. The case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative targeting violent crime and transnational criminal organizations.
This investigation was a joint effort between the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, Perry Police Department, and Florida Department of Corrections. Assistant United States Attorney James A. McCain is handling the prosecution. Sentencing for Miles has been scheduled for October 2, 2025, at the United States Courthouse in Tallahassee before Judge Mark E. Walker.
The United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Florida is committed to ensuring justice and security, as it serves as one of the nation’s principal litigators under the direction of the Attorney General.
