ORLANDO, FL – A federal jury found Lander Carlton McLoyd, a 39-year-old Melbourne man, guilty of serious charges, including possession with intent to distribute cocaine base and marijuana, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Mclloyd is facing a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years, up to a maximum penalty of life in federal prison. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for October 2013. Mclloyd was indicted on January 30, 2013.
According to evidence presented at trial, a confidential source working at the direction of law enforcement purchased cocaine base from McLoyd’s residence in Melbourne on two separate occasions. A search warrant was executed at the residence on October 12, 2012, during which investigators found cocaine base, marijuana, and three loaded firearms.
Mclloyd has a prior federal felony conviction for conspiracy and possession with intent to distribute cocaine base as well as prior state felony convictions for vehicular homicide, cocaine possession, and uttering a forged instrument. Due to his prior federal conviction, he is facing enhanced penalties at sentencing.
The case was investigated by the Melbourne Police Department, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. It is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Roger B. Handberg.
Mclloyd’s conviction is a significant blow to the community, as it raises concerns about the prevalence of gun violence and drug trafficking in the area. The grim reality is that individuals like Mclloyd pose a significant threat to public safety, and law enforcement agencies will continue to work tirelessly to bring these individuals to justice.
