Florida Man Sentenced to 20 Years for Wire Fraud
MARTINSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA – Windsor Nycklass, a 32-year-old man from West Park, Florida, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in a wire fraud scheme that targeted the IRS.
Nycklass pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft in U.S. District Court. According to the government, in March and April 2015, Nycklass obtained the names, dates of birth, and social security numbers of multiple taxpayers without their knowledge or consent.
Nycklass then used this sensitive information to access the IRS’s eAuthentication system and file fraudulent tax returns using the taxpayers’ identities. The returns were processed at an IRS facility in Martinsburg, West Virginia.
As part of his plea agreement, Nycklass has agreed to pay $50,801 in restitution to the IRS. He faces a maximum fine of up to $250,000 and two years in prison for the aggravated identity theft charge.
Nycklass’s sentence is a result of his guilty plea and will be based on the seriousness of the offenses and his prior criminal history. U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert W. Trumble presided over the case.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Shawn M. Adkins is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government. The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration – Cybercrime Investigations Division investigated the case.
Nycklass’s scheme has left many taxpayers wondering how to protect themselves from similar scams. The IRS advises taxpayers to be cautious when sharing their personal and financial information and to report any suspicious activity to the authorities immediately.
