A brazen scheme to transport hundreds of thousands of dollars in stolen property out of the St. Louis area has been busted by the feds. Three men from Florida have been accused of raking in the cash and making a quick getaway.

The indictment, unsealed on Nov. 1, 2023, in U.S. District Court in St. Louis, charges Benjamin Andres Ovalle-Taibo, Jonathan Vejar-Caro, and Henry Jose Ferreira-Perez with one count of transportation of stolen goods, with an estimated value of over $5,000.

Ferreira-Perez, 20, made a court appearance on Thursday and pleaded not guilty to the charge. The other two defendants are currently being held in custody in Florida.

According to a detention motion filed in court, Ferreira-Perez and his associates traveled from Florida to St. Louis County on June 9, 2023, where they allegedly stole hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of items. A separate detention motion for Vejar-Caro states that he arrived in the United States from Chile in February 2023. In court, Ferreira-Perez claimed to be from Venezuela.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Cort VanOstran is leading the prosecution in this high-profile case. The investigation was a joint effort between the FBI and the Ladue Police Department.
