Sarasota Swindler Stole $271,124 in Railroad Retirement Benefits
Tampa, Florida – In a brazen scheme that spanned years, Allen R. Jenkins, a 68-year-old Sarasota resident, pleaded guilty to stealing $271,124 in Railroad Retirement Board disability benefits. The maximum penalty for Jenkins could reach 10 years in federal prison, pending sentencing.
According to the plea agreement, Jenkins, a United States Railroad Retirement (USRRB) disability annuitant, was actively working in multiple capacities throughout the period he was receiving USRRB disability benefits and failed to report any of that work as required. Specifically, Jenkins was listed as a Registered Agent/Officer of at least 22 businesses, maintained five real estate broker’s licenses, and was licensed and working as a Community Association Manager.
Jenkins failed to report this work activity, despite receiving annual reminder notices to report all work activity, and provided false, incomplete, and misleading answers on the one occasion he was directly asked about his work activity by the RRB. Jenkins was also buying and renovating properties for profit, which he did not report.
The scheme allowed the USRRB to overpay Jenkins approximately $271,124 in disability benefits. This case serves as a stark reminder that the system is not foolproof and that those who seek to cheat the system will be caught and brought to justice.
The investigation was led by the Railroad Retirement Board, Office of the Inspector General. The case is being prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Suzanne Huyler and Assistant United States Attorney Michael Gordon.
The brazen nature of Jenkins’s scheme and the significant amount of money he stole make this case a stark reminder that those who seek to cheat the system will be held accountable. As we continue to investigate and prosecute those who seek to game the system, we will ensure that justice is served and that those who commit these crimes are brought to justice.
