Tampa, FL – The grim reign of Richard Aldo Melendez, 36, of Wauchula, has come to an end as U.S. District Judge Charlene Edwards Honeywell sentenced him to 14 years in federal prison for methamphetamine trafficking.
Melendez, the ring leader, was caught red-handed after selling nearly 15 kilograms of the deadly drug to undercover agents from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and DEA. His accomplice, Ellen Jean Bivens, 25, of Zolfo Springs, and Abdon Rivera Jr., 33, of Lake Wales, were also involved in the operation.
In a dramatic turn of events, troopers from the Florida Highway Patrol, working in tandem with DEA agents, apprehended Melendez and Bivens as they returned from a trip to Texas. The seizure marked a significant blow to the meth trade in the Middle District of Florida.
Bivens has already been sentenced to 37 months for her part in the ring, while Rivera awaits his fate after pleading guilty. This case served as a stark reminder of the relentless pursuit of drug traffickers by law enforcement agencies like DEA and FDLE.
The investigation was a collaborative effort between the DEA, FDLE, and FHP. Assistant United States Attorney David P. Sullivan led the prosecution, ensuring justice for those affected by Melendez’s criminal activities.
