Food Stamp Fraudster Sentenced to 18 Months

A 46-year-old Opelika woman has been handed a 18-month prison sentence for her role in a Food Stamp fraud scheme. Barbara Nell Bush, 46, was found guilty of fraudulent use of EBT benefits in August 2014 and was sentenced by United States District Court Judge Callie V. S. Granade.

According to officials, Bush attempted to deceive the system by misusing her EBT benefits. Her actions have resulted in her being ordered to pay $760.65 in restitution to the Department of Agriculture. This is on top of her 18-month prison sentence.

In addition to her prison time, Bush has also been ordered to serve three years of supervised release once she is released from prison. Her supervision will include mandatory drug testing and treatment to address any underlying issues that may have contributed to her crime.

The case was a collaborative effort between the 4th Judicial Circuit Task Force, the United States Secret Service and the Department of Agriculture. The United States Attorney’s Office, led by Assistant United States Attorney Gloria Bedwell, prosecuted the case.

This case serves as a reminder of the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions. Food Stamp benefits are meant to provide assistance to those in need, not to be exploited for personal gain.

Barbara Nell Bush’s sentence is a significant blow to those who would seek to defraud the system. It is a testament to the dedication of law enforcement and prosecutors who work tirelessly to protect the public and ensure that those who break the law are held accountable.

As the investigation and prosecution of this case comes to a close, it is clear that the consequences of committing Food Stamp fraud are severe. Bush’s sentence should serve as a warning to others who would consider following in her footsteps.

The public is advised to report any suspected cases of Food Stamp fraud to the authorities. Together, we can work to prevent this type of crime and ensure that those who need assistance are able to receive it without fear of exploitation.
