In a shocking case of modern-day slavery, three men – Zhu Chen, Jiayi Chen, and Jianjun Lu – have been indicted for forced labor and related offenses at Cartersville-based flooring manufacturer Wellmade Industries. The alleged scheme involved recruiting Chinese nationals with false promises, then subjecting them to inhumane working conditions, including 12-hour shifts, six days a week, and threatening them with physical violence, deportation, and debt if they refused to work. The victims were also housed in overcrowded and dirty residences owned by Wellmade.
According to U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg, the defendants’ actions constitute a blatant disregard for human rights and labor laws. The indictment is the result of a joint investigation by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and other law enforcement agencies.
