Babajide Adesayo, Money Laundering, Georgia 2020

⏱ 2 min read

Babajide Adesayo, an Atlanta man, was convicted of laundering over $2.7 million stolen from victims of online fraud, including romance scams, between April 2020 and September 2021. Adesayo was part of a complex transnational network that preyed upon elderly victims, siphoning their retirement savings overseas to China, Hong Kong, and Nigeria. The fraudsters engaged unwitting victims online, posing as friends or business associates, and convinced them to send money. Adesayo then laundered the stolen funds, even continuing to do so after his indictment, arrest, and release on bond.

The conviction is the result of an eight-day trial and a joint investigation by the FBI, Homeland Security Investigations, and other federal, state, and local partners. According to U.S. Attorney Theodore S. Hertzberg, Adesayo’s actions were those of a prolific money launderer who facilitated the theft of nearly $3 million from vulnerable victims.

The FBI and other agencies involved in the case have vowed to relentlessly pursue those who prey on vulnerable victims and profit from fraud. The conviction sends a clear message that those who help transnational fraud networks move stolen money will be held accountable.

Adesayo now faces a significant sentence for his role in the online fraud scheme. The case highlights the importance of cooperation between law enforcement agencies to combat complex, transnational crimes.
