Patrick Shackelford, a former federal correctional officer at the USP-Atlanta, was convicted of accepting bribes from inmates to smuggle methamphetamine and other contraband into the prison. From June 2018 to February 2019, Shackelford conspired with inmates to introduce the contraband through a secret hole in the visitation area.

According to the evidence presented in court, Shackelford’s elaborate scheme put the safety and security of his fellow officers, prisoners, and the institution at risk. By accepting bribes from inmates, Shackelford undermined the integrity of the prison and compromised the trust of the public.

Shackelford’s corruption was discovered by the FBI, which remains committed to rooting out corruption at every level and holding accountable those who violate the public’s trust. The Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General is also committed to bringing perpetrators to justice, as stated by Special Agent in Charge Eric Fehlman.
