A 27-year-old Tampa man, Joseph Xavier Murphy, has been charged with trafficking in credit card manufacturing equipment, according to an indictment announced by Acting United States Attorney W. Stephen Muldrow.
If convicted, Murphy faces a maximum penalty of 15 years in federal prison. The indictment is a result of an investigation by the Starke Police Department and the U.S. Secret Service – Jacksonville Field Office.
Murphy was arrested by law enforcement and made his initial appearance in federal court, where he was temporarily detained. A detention hearing and arraignment are set for 1:30 p.m. on Friday, April 21, 2017.
The case against Murphy will be prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kevin C. Frein. An indictment is merely a formal charge that a defendant has committed one or more violations of federal criminal law, and every defendant is presumed innocent unless, and until, proven guilty.
The investigation into Murphy’s activities was a collaborative effort between local and federal law enforcement agencies. The Starke Police Department and the U.S. Secret Service – Jacksonville Field Office worked together to gather evidence and build a case against Murphy.
The charge of trafficking in credit card manufacturing equipment is a serious one, and if convicted, Murphy will face significant penalties. The use of credit card manufacturing equipment to produce counterfeit credit cards can result in significant financial losses for individuals and businesses.
The U.S. Secret Service has a long history of investigating and prosecuting cases involving credit card trafficking and other forms of financial crime. The agency’s expertise in this area is a valuable asset in the fight against financial crime.
