A wealthy foreign national with a taste for American politics has been sent to the slammer for running a decade-long scheme to buy elections with fake donors.
Roger Hoffman, a 70-year-old Saint Kitts and Nevis citizen, used a straw donor to disguise the foreign nature of his contributions, giving money to candidates for federal and state office in Wisconsin.
For over a decade, Hoffman funneled more than $300,000 into the US electoral system, writing checks and making online donations using a complex network of bank accounts and debit cards.
But Hoffman’s scheme was too good to be true, and he was eventually caught by federal agents who interviewed him and uncovered his web of deceit.
Hoffman is now doing 20 months in federal prison, plus a $150,000 fine. His guilty plea in September 2025 marked the end of a long and complex investigation.
