A former US Congressman and lobbyist, David Rivera, was found guilty of secretly lobbying for the Venezuelan government, laundering millions of dollars, and violating the Foreign Agent Registration Act.
The scheme, which spanned from 2018 to 2020, involved Rivera and his co-defendant Esther Nuhfer, using coded messages and shell companies to conceal their relationship with the Maduro regime.
The duo used their connections to secure a $50 million contract, which they laundered through a series of complex financial transactions.
US Attorney Jason A. Reding Quiñones vowed to protect transparency and safeguard democracy from covert foreign influence, stating, ‘In South Florida, where so many families fled communist oppression, that kind of betrayal carries real weight.’
The conviction sends a powerful message that democracy is not for sale to foreign adversaries, and choosing personal greed over legal transparency will result in severe consequences.
