Christopher Allen Carmichael, Attempted Coercion and Enticement of a Minor, Alaska 2020

A former Bethel principal has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for trying to sexually entice a minor. Christopher Allen Carmichael, 57, pled guilty to attempted coercion and enticement of a minor to engage in sexual activity in November 2020.

According to the FBI, Carmichael became the subject of a federal investigation in November 2019 after the Bethel Police Department contacted the FBI concerning his online activities. During the investigation, Carmichael engaged in graphic sexual communications with an undercover FBI agent posing as a fictional 13-year-old girl.

In a series of text messages in December 2019, Carmichael described several sexually explicit acts he would do to the fictional 13-year-old girl. He also reminded her to delete their messages and to refer to her as 18 to avoid getting into trouble.

Carmichael continued to engage in these activities despite knowing the girl was underage. His actions were a clear abuse of trust, said Robert Britt, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Anchorage Field Office.

“No child should ever have to go through this. Parents and communities entrusted Carmichael with a great responsibility, but he abused that position of trust in the most disgraceful way imaginable,” Britt said.

Carmichael’s sentence is a result of a collaborative effort between the FBI, Bethel Police Department, Alaska State Troopers, and Anchorage Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel Doty prosecuted the case.

This case is part of the Rural Alaska Anti-Violence Enforcement Network (RAAVEN) initiative to increase engagement, coordination and action on public safety in Alaska Native communities.

Carmichael’s sentence is also part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the U.S. Attorney’s Office to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.
