Gregory Kyle Seerden, Sexual Exploitation of a Minor, Virginia 2024

A former U.S. Navy SEAL has been sentenced to 27 years in federal prison for producing graphic videos of a sleeping five-year-old child being sexually abused. Gregory Kyle Seerden, 32, of Virginia Beach, pleaded guilty to sexual exploitation of a minor and was also handed 25 years of supervised release and a $10,000 fine.

The case unraveled after a woman reported to base security at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story that Seerden had sexually assaulted her. During the subsequent NCIS investigation, agents seized Seerden’s iPhone and discovered digital evidence of child pornography. Forensic analysis confirmed 78 images and four videos depicting the sexual abuse of a minor known to Seerden—recorded by his own iPhone.

The videos show Seerden sexually assaulting the child while the victim sleeps, in a crime that prosecutors described as a grotesque betrayal of trust and duty. “Instead of being a protector, Seerden was a predator,” said Cliff Everton, Special Agent in Charge of the NCIS Norfolk Field Office. “He is the antithesis of every value the military services hold dear.”

Tracy Doherty-McCormick, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, emphasized the severity of the crimes: “Gregory Seerden victimized a child and used mobile technology to memorialize sexually explicit videos. As this prosecution makes clear, the United States will seek to hold accountable anyone who sexually exploits our most vulnerable citizens.”

Seerden also faces separate federal charges in San Diego tied to conduct from the summer of 2014. That case, a reopened NCIS investigation, involves allegations of recording the sexual abuse of another minor known to him—again using an iPhone. The similarities between the cases underscore a pattern of predatory behavior stretching across years and jurisdictions.

The sentencing was handed down by U.S. District Judge Raymond A. Jackson. The case was prosecuted by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney David A. Layne and Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth M. Yusi. It falls under Project Safe Childhood, a DOJ initiative targeting child sexual exploitation. Court records are available via PACER under Case No. 2:17-cr-67.
