Child Predator Exposed: Scituate Man Faces Up to 20 Years in Prison
Robert Brown, Jr., a 42-year-old former resident of Scituate, Rhode Island, has pleaded guilty to possessing and distributing child pornography. Brown’s guilty plea was made in federal court in Providence, where he was charged with three counts of distribution of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography.
According to court records, Brown had been accessing and sharing child pornography files from his residence in Scituate since September 2009. An undercover FBI agent, posing as a friend, was able to access Brown’s files and downloaded images and videos depicting child pornography on at least three occasions.
The investigation, which began in 2009, revealed that Brown had been accessing the files from an Internet address subscribed to him at his Scituate residence. In May 2010, FBI agents executed a court-authorized search of Brown’s residence and seized several items, including three laptop computers, 19 hard drives, and portable digital storage memory cards.
A forensic examination of the seized items revealed 2,297 images and 32 videos containing images of known children identified in 80 series depicting child pornography. Brown, who is currently free on unsecured bond, is scheduled to be sentenced on October 23, 2013.
Brown faces statutory penalties of a minimum mandatory 5 years and up to 20 years in federal prison followed by a mandatory 5 years of supervised release for distribution of child pornography; and up to 10 years in prison followed by a mandatory 5 years of supervised release for possession of child pornography.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney John P. McAdams.
Brown’s guilty plea marks a significant victory for law enforcement in the fight against child exploitation. The case serves as a reminder that those who engage in this heinous crime will be held accountable.
