Lara Pineda, Methamphetamine Possession with Intent to Distribute, Iowa 2018

Lara Pineda, 33, of Fort Dodge, Iowa, was sentenced to 210 months in federal prison on February 27, 2018, for possession of nearly a pound of pure methamphetamine with intent to distribute. The sentence, handed down in Cedar Rapids by U.S. District Judge Linda R. Reade, marks the end of a case derailed by flight and fueled by high-grade narcotics.

Pineda pleaded guilty on March 24, 2017, to a single count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. During the plea, she admitted to holding the drug with plans to sell some or all of it. The bust came on September 3, 2016, when law enforcement searched her vehicle and uncovered approximately one pound of actual, pure methamphetamine — a stash with significant street value and distribution potential.

After entering her guilty plea, Pineda vanished. She fled the country and was later apprehended in Mexico before being extradited back to the United States to face sentencing. Her disappearance added federal flight charges to an already steep legal reckoning, though the core conviction remained rooted in the drug offense.

The court imposed a $100 special assessment and mandated that Pineda serve a 5-year term of supervised release following her 210-month prison sentence. Federal parole does not exist, meaning Pineda will serve at least 85% of her sentence before release, under strict monitoring.

At sentencing, prosecutors emphasized the purity and quantity of the meth as aggravating factors. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jack Lammers, who prosecuted the case, underscored the threat such quantities pose to communities. The investigation was led by the North Central Iowa Narcotics Task Force and the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office, agencies deep in the front lines of the Midwest’s drug war.

Pineda is currently in U.S. Marshal custody, awaiting transfer to a designated federal prison. Court records, including case file 16-3047, are available through the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Iowa’s electronic filing system.
