Fort Thompson Man Charged with Assault

A Fort Thompson, South Dakota, man has been hit with federal charges for allegedly assaulting an intimate partner with a dangerous weapon.

Calvin Bagola, 27, was indicted by a federal grand jury on August 19, 2014, on three counts of assault: Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, and Assault Resulting in Substantial Bodily Injury.

According to the indictment, Bagola allegedly committed the crimes on February 13, 2014. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in custody and/or a $250,000 fine, 3 years of supervised release, and up to $300 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.

Bagola appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on September 8, 2014, and pled not guilty to the indictment. The investigation is being conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Crow Creek Agency. Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges is prosecuting the case.

Bagola was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial. A trial date has not been set. The charges are mere accusations, and Bagola is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
