Fort Wayne Dealer Taylor Gets 16+ Years

FORT WAYNE, IN – Derek L. Taylor, 47, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, will spend the next sixteen years and seven months in federal prison after pleading guilty to charges stemming from a drug trafficking operation. Chief Judge Holly A. Brady of the United States District Court handed down the 197-month sentence, followed by four years of supervised release, announced Acting United States Attorney Tina L. Nommay.

Taylor wasn’t just slinging dope; he was armed to the teeth while doing it. Evidence presented in court revealed Taylor distributed cocaine throughout August and September of 2023. A subsequent raid on his location unearthed a veritable arsenal – heroin, fentanyl, cocaine, and deadly M30 pills laced with fentanyl. Alongside the narcotics, authorities recovered three handguns and a stolen semi-automatic rifle. Digital scales, baggies, and cutting agents indicated a sophisticated, large-scale operation. This wasn’t a first-time offense.

Court documents paint Taylor as a repeat offender, a career criminal with two prior drug distribution convictions and a felony battery conviction on his record. This history significantly impacted his sentencing, classifying him as a career offender under federal guidelines. The feds weren’t messing around. Taylor had clearly demonstrated a disregard for the law and a willingness to profit from the misery of others, and the judge reflected that in her decision.

The bust was the result of a coordinated effort by the FBI’s Fort Wayne Safe Streets Gang Task Force – a team comprised of FBI agents, Indiana State Police, Allen County Police Department, and Fort Wayne Police Department. They weren’t working alone. The Drug Enforcement Administration’s North Central Laboratory and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives also lent their expertise to the investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Stacey R. Speith handled the prosecution, meticulously building a case that stuck.

This case wasn’t just about taking down one dealer; it was part of a larger, multi-agency initiative known as the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF). OCDETF focuses on dismantling the highest-level drug trafficking organizations that plague the nation. It’s a prosecutor-led, intelligence-driven approach that leverages the resources of federal, state, and local law enforcement to cripple criminal networks.

The operation also fell under the umbrella of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by fostering collaboration between law enforcement and the communities they serve. Launched in May 2021, PSN emphasizes building trust, supporting community-based violence prevention programs, and strategically targeting enforcement efforts. This sentence sends a clear message: those who endanger our neighborhoods with drugs and guns will be held accountable. “
