Four Charged in Armed Robbery Spree
The city is reeling from a string of brazen armed robberies at check cashing businesses, with four Philadelphia men facing charges in the heinous crimes.
Nysare Alston, 25, Christopher Corley, 27, Hassan Corley, 27, and Kenneth Thomas, 24, were charged by indictment in connection with the alleged robbery spree, which targeted America’s Cash Express, Diamond Check Cashing, Ace Check Cashing, and Don’s Check Cashing.
The indictment alleges that the defendants committed a total of six armed robberies, netting them over $124,000 in stolen cash. The robberies took place between February 15, 2014, and September 10, 2014, at various locations across the city.
The most egregious of the robberies occurred on February 15, 2014, at America’s Cash Express, where the defendants made off with a staggering $49,000. The following month, they targeted Diamond Check Cashing, stealing approximately $34,000 on July 12, 2014. The string of robberies continued on July 25, 2014, at Ace Check Cashing, where the defendants netted $10,000, and on September 10, 2014, at Don’s Check Cashing, where they stole $31,000.
During the attempted armed robbery of Ace Check Cashing on August 2, 2014, the defendants were thwarted in their efforts to steal an estimated $10,000. The attempted robbery was part of a larger scheme that involved the defendants using firearms to intimidate and rob business owners.
If convicted of all charges, the defendants face severe penalties. Nysare Alston and Kenneth Thomas each face a mandatory minimum sentence of 82 years in prison, while Christopher Corley faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 32 years. Hassan Corley, the youngest of the group, faces a mandatory minimum term of seven years in prison.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Yvonne Osirim. An indictment is an accusation, and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
