Four Men Sentenced to Life for Murder, Ransom Demand, Washington DC 2018
In a shocking turn of events, four Washington, D.C. men have been sentenced to life in prison for their roles in the kidnapping and murder of a Maryland man who was abducted at gunpoint in June 2018.
According to court documents, the victim, 28-year-old Andre Simmons, Jr. of Bowie, Maryland, was abducted on June 19, 2018, and held for ransom. His body was found in an alley in Southeast Washington, bound with zip ties and shot 19 times.
The defendants, Darin Moore, Jr., 29, Gabriel Brown, 33, John Sweeney, 29, and James Taylor, 33, all of Washington, D.C., were found guilty on November 1, 2022, following a trial in U.S. District Court.
Moore, Brown, and Sweeney were each sentenced to life in prison on the charge of kidnapping resulting in death, and 45 years in prison on counts of conspiracy to commit kidnapping, first degree premeditated murder and felony murder, all to run concurrent to each other. Taylor was sentenced to life in prison for kidnapping resulting in death and 45 years in prison for felony murder, to run concurrently.
The investigation into the crime was led by the FBI Washington Field Office Violent Crimes Task Force and the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Division. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Steven Wasserman and Will Hart.
The gruesome crime has left the community in shock, with many calling for justice for the victim and his family. The sentencing of the four defendants brings a measure of closure to the case, but it also serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of violent crime.
As the community continues to grapple with the aftermath of this tragedy, one thing is clear: justice has been served, and the men responsible for this heinous crime will spend the rest of their lives behind bars.
