East St. Louis Man Sentenced for Heroin Offense
A 27-month prison sentence was handed down to 38-year-old Frederick D. Purnell, Sr. of East St. Louis, Illinois, for his role in a heroin possession case.
Purnell was arrested on April 4, 2013, by Deputy U.S. Marshals in Cahokia, Illinois, who seized approximately 5 grams of heroin from a nightstand in his bedroom.
According to evidence presented during Purnell’s change of plea hearing, he had been selling heroin in the Cahokia area and had intended to sell the seized heroin.
Purnell, a resident of East St. Louis, Illinois, pled guilty to the federal charge on April 14, 2015.
The investigation, led by the U.S. Marshals Service, resulted in Purnell’s arrest and subsequent conviction.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Robert L. Garrison.
Purnell’s 27-month prison sentence will be served in a federal prison. The exact facility has not been disclosed.
The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois, Stephen R. Wigginton, announced the sentencing on July 7, 2015.
