Two Sentenced in Heroin Overdose Death Case
In a shocking turn of events, Tyrone L. Adams and Cara L. Moss have been sentenced for their role in selling the heroin that led to the overdose death of Leonard O. Hormann, III.
According to reports, Adams, 33, and Moss, 26, both from Alton, IL, sold the heroin to Hormann on August 20, 2012, in Alton. Hormann was just 23 years old at the time of his death.
Adams received a 15-year prison sentence, while Moss received a 10-year sentence. Both sentences were handed down on April 22, 2013, in United States District Court in East St. Louis.
The case was a result of a thorough investigation conducted by the Alton Police Department. United States Attorney Stephen R. Wigginton praised the work of the Alton Police, saying, ‘The Alton Police investigation in this case was as good as any I have seen.’
Adams and Moss both pled guilty on January 14, 2013, to selling heroin to Hormann. In addition to the heroin distribution charge, Adams was also sentenced for maintaining drug-involved premises and distributing heroin within 1000 feet of a school. Moss received a concurrent 10-year sentence for maintaining drug-involved premises.
At the sentencing hearing, Moss spoke candidly about her struggles with addiction, saying, ‘I started with drinking in high school, then marijuana, cocaine, then pain pills, and finally heroin. I went to rehab and failed. Now I’ve lost my kids because of the terrible choices I made.’
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Robert L. Garrison. Wigginton commended the close coordination between his office and the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office.
The sentencing of Adams and Moss is part of a larger effort to combat the heroin overdose death epidemic in the region.
