Defendant Handed 10-Year Prison Sentence for Cocaine Offense

In a recent federal court case, Senior U.S. District Judge Gregory A. Presnell sentenced 47-year-old Jackie Jamal Hines to 10 years in federal prison for possessing with intent to distribute multiple kilograms of cocaine. Hines pleaded guilty to the charges on May 30, 2024.

According to court documents, in December 2023, law enforcement officers attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle Hines was driving after he left his storage unit in Melbourne. Hines exited his vehicle and fled on foot from the officers. Once he was detained, officers found a bag containing more than 300 grams of cocaine and two digital scales on his person.

A search warrant was then obtained for the storage unit, where agents located a safe with five pressed bricks containing about a kilogram each of cocaine.

The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Melbourne Police Department. It was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Megan Testerman.

As part of the federal sentence, Hines must also serve five years of supervised release following his prison term.

The guilty plea and subsequent sentencing mark a significant victory for law enforcement agencies in the ongoing fight against cocaine trafficking in the region.
