A federal indictment has been brought against Michael Lee King, a 31-year-old man from Mt. Airy, Maryland, for his alleged role in a heroin overdose death in Frederick County. The indictment, announced by United States Attorney Robert K. Hur, charges King with Distribution of a Controlled Substance with Death Resulting.
The indictment alleges that on November 5, 2017, King distributed controlled substances containing heroin, fentanyl, and cocaine to an individual, resulting in an overdose death. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kelly O. Hayes.
King faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years in prison with a maximum sentence of life in prison if found guilty. He appeared before United States Magistrate Judge Thomas M. DiGirolamo in District Court in Greenbelt on May 14, 2018.
The investigation was a collaborative effort between the FBI, the DEA, the Montgomery County Police Department, the Frederick County Police Department, and the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office. United States Attorney Robert K. Hur commended the agencies for their work in the case.
An indictment is not a finding of guilt, and King is presumed innocent until proven guilty at some later criminal proceedings. The case serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of the opioid epidemic and the importance of holding those responsible accountable.
The indictment comes as the opioid epidemic continues to ravage communities across the country. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 47,000 Americans died from opioid overdoses in 2017 alone. The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office has been working to combat the opioid crisis in the county, and this indictment is a significant step in that effort.
King’s indictment is a stark reminder of the dangers of heroin and other opioids. The indictment highlights the need for increased awareness and education about the dangers of these substances and the importance of seeking help for addiction.
