BALTIMORE, MD – In a gritty blow against the drug underworld, Rodney Russell, 52, of Baltimore, was today sentenced to nine years in federal prison followed by five years of supervised release for conspiracy to distribute and possess with the intent to distribute heroin. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge William D. Quarles, Jr.
Russell’s involvement in the sinister scheme spanned from July 2012 through November 2013, when he was a member of the Black Guerrilla Family (BGF) gang. According to court documents, Russell conspired with others to distribute heroin across the Park Heights and Belvedere neighborhoods of Baltimore. He received money and drugs from fellow BGF members operating at street level drug distribution points.
The evidence presented indicated that during the conspiracy’s duration, Russell was directly responsible for distributing between one and three kilograms of the deadly substance. His role in the heroin trade was a significant factor in the federal sentencing guidelines.
United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein praised the DEA, Baltimore Police Department, and Baltimore City State’s Attorney’s Office for their relentless pursuit of justice in this case. Rosenstein also acknowledged Assistant United States Attorney James T. Wallner’s efforts in prosecuting Russell.
Russell’s plea agreement outlined his criminal activities within the BGF, which included selling his own heroin at distribution points controlled by other gang members. The investigation that led to Russell’s conviction was a collaborative effort, demonstrating the commitment of law enforcement agencies to combat drug trafficking in Baltimore.
