Browning Man Sentenced to 18 Months in Prison for Assaulting Elderly Business Owner
A Browning man who admitted to beating an elderly small business owner while demanding money was sentenced to 18 months in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release, officials said.
Frederick Melvin Noon, Jr., 39, pleaded guilty in January to assault resulting in serious bodily injury.
The sentencing occurred in Great Falls, Montana, on March 21, 2024, with Chief U.S. District Judge Brian M. Morris presiding. The court also ordered Noon to pay $2,500 for reported lost wages.
According to court documents, on March 21, 2023, Noon assaulted the victim, identified as a 70-year-old small business owner, while demanding money. Noon was intoxicated when he walked into the business and demanded money. When the victim refused, Noon became angry and started demanding that the victim retrieve money from a back room. The victim gave Noon a few dollars, but was unsatisfied and began assaulting the victim.
Noon grabbed the victim by the head and started scratching him, then threw him to the ground. The victim suffered broken bones and underwent surgery for injuries from the assault.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office prosecuted the case, with assistance from the Blackfeet Law Enforcement Services and Bureau of Indian Affairs conducting the investigation.
Noon will serve his 18-month prison sentence, followed by three years of supervised release. In addition to the prison time, Noon was ordered to pay $2,500 for reported lost wages.
This disturbing case highlights the need for increased awareness and support for small business owners, particularly in rural areas like the Blackfeet Indian Reservation.
By holding perpetrators accountable for their crimes, we can work towards creating a safer and more just community for all.
