BATON ROUGE, LA – A brutal rapist has been handed a 73-month federal prison sentence for failing to register as a sex offender and violating the terms of his supervised release. Bryant Emerson Freeman, 40, from Grants Pass, Oregon, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Shelly D. Dick after absconding from a Baton Rouge halfway house in April 2016.
FREEMAN, who had to report to authorities every three months and update his sex offender registration, not only evaded these requirements post-flight but has also established a pattern of non-compliance with sex registration laws, the court noted. His recidivism risk was highlighted as a concern by Judge Dick.
Acting United States Attorney Corey Amundson emphasized the importance of sex offender registration in protecting communities, especially children. “Sex offenders who fail to abide by such requirements face severe consequences,” said Amundson, commending the U.S. Marshal’s Service and prosecutors for their efforts.
U.S. Marshal Randy Breckwoldt stated, “The investigation and apprehension of sex offenders is a top priority in this District. The Marshal’s Service will continue to work tirelessly to bring justice to any offender who fails to register.”
This case was handled by Assistant United States Attorney Lyman E. Thornton III, with the U.S. Marshal’s Service conducting the investigation.
