Lakota Wakley, Fentanyl Conspiracy, California 2024

GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: Lakota Tehya Wakley, a 21-year-old from Clovis, California, has been handed an eight-year sentence for his role in a deadly fentanyl distribution conspiracy. The sentence was announced by Acting U.S. Attorney Michele Beckwith after the defendant’s conviction.

Wakley was found to have conspired with others between November 18 and December 9, 2024, to distribute the lethal substance. His involvement began unraveling following the tragic death of a 24-year-old man who overdosed on fentanyl. Court documents reveal that Wakley directed users, including the victim, to his co-defendant for drug sales, pocketing a share of the profits.

At today’s sentencing hearing, U.S. District Judge Kirk E. Sherriff determined that Wakley’s actions directly led to the fatal overdose. This case was the culmination of a joint investigation by the Fentanyl Overdose Resolution Team (FORT), a multi-agency force including Homeland Security Investigations, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Fresno Police Departments.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Calvin Lee and Arin C. Heinz are leading the prosecution in this high-stakes case. The conviction is part of Operation Synthetic Opioid Surge (S.O.S.), an initiative to combat synthetic opioids across the Eastern District of California and other federal districts, announced by the Justice Department in 2018.

Wakley’s sentence is a stark reminder of the deadly consequences associated with fentanyl trafficking. As the S.O.S. program continues its efforts to dismantle distribution networks, law enforcement agencies are determined to put those responsible for such tragedies behind bars.
