Fresno, CA – A 27-year-old man is facing up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine after pleading guilty to possessing ammunition following a high-speed chase.
Daniel Santos Galaviz, of Fresno, was arrested on February 24 after attempting to flee from a vehicle during a traffic stop. Officers recovered a loaded magazine from his possession.
Galaviz’s prior criminal record prohibits him from owning ammunition, and his guilty plea comes as a result of an investigation by Homeland Security Investigations and the Fresno Police Department.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Antonio J. Pataca is handling the case, which is part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods program, a joint effort between law enforcement and the community to reduce violent crime.
The Project Safe Neighborhoods program was reinvigorated in 2017 as part of the DOJ’s renewed focus on targeting violent criminals.
Galaviz is scheduled to be sentenced on December 6, 2021, by U.S. District Judge Dale A. Drozd. His sentence will be determined at the discretion of the court, taking into account various factors.
