ABINGDON, Va. – The grimy streets of Fries, Virginia witnessed a chilling act when Jonathan Reed Stiltner, 50, was sentenced today to 42 months in federal prison for mailing threats against multiple federal officials. Stiltner’s actions were so brazen that he carried out his terror campaign even while serving state charges.
According to court documents, the 50-year-old handwrote letters of menacing intent while ensnared by numerous felony charges from Dickenson County. One letter, sent on November 13, 2023, targeted a federal judge, Assistant U.S. Attorney, federal probation officer, and a member of the Federal Public Defender’s Office. Stiltner’s chilling words: ‘Although Im (sic) incarcerated I still have people on the street who can do things…’
“Every day, judges, the judiciary staff, prosecutors, and public defenders work for the American justice system and should be free to do their work for our great Nation without fear of violence or retaliation,” Acting United States Attorney Robert N. Tracci declared. “This office will aggressively prosecute those who attack our justice system by threatening violence against those who serve it.”
“Does someone have to get hurt to prove Im (sic) very serious,” Stiltner wrote in his letter, a chilling testament to the depths of his malevolence. The justice system is not sparing no quarter for such threats.
The case was jointly investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals, ensuring that Stiltner’s reign of terror would end in a federal cell rather than on the streets of Fries, Virginia.
Robert N. Tracci, Acting United States Attorney for the Western District of Virginia, and Anthony A. Spotswood, Special Agent in Charge of the Washington Field Division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, announced the sentence. The sentence is a stark reminder that threats against public officials will not be tolerated.
