A South Florida fuel executive is going down for good after making off with $4.5 million in a brazen contract bid scam targeting the US Navy.
Jasen Butler, 38, owner of Independent Marine Oil Services LLC, was sentenced to 5 years in prison and ordered to forfeit his ill-gotten gains after a jury convicted him of 34 counts of wire fraud, forgery, and money laundering in January.
The scam unfolded between August 2022 and January 2024, with Butler submitting falsified documents to multiple US warships attempting to purchase fuel in international ports in Saudi Arabia, Singapore, and Croatia.
When Navy officials got wind of the scheme, Butler doubled down, adopting a fake identity and feigning employment by a fictitious fuel division of a different company.
Butler used the stolen cash to buy multiple multi-million-dollar properties in Florida and Colorado, but his scheme ultimately unraveled, earning him a spot behind bars.
