Iftikar Ahmed, Securities Fraud, Connecticut 2015

BOSTON – A significant victory in the fight against financial crime was announced today as United States Attorney Leah B. Foley revealed that Iftikar Ahmed’s Greenwich, Conn., mansion has been sold for $7.35 million to enforce his appearance bond.

Abruptly charged with one count of securities fraud in April 2015, Ahmed was released from pre-trial custody under strict conditions. These included signing a $9 million appearance bond, secured by their Greenwich residence, which he did alongside his wife as sureties.

However, Ahmed’s flight to India in May 2015 violated the terms of his release. The U.S. Attorney Foley emphasized the severity of evading justice, stating, “An appearance bond is not a procedural formality; it’s a deterrent and ensures defendants appear in court.”

In response to Ahmed’s defiance, the government commenced proceedings to enforce the bond in May 2019. After the bond was declared forfeited, default judgment was entered and upheld on appeal. A petition for remission was denied, leading to the deed being tendered to the United States.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office then listed the property for sale, culminating in a July 15, 2025, closing at $7.35 million. Foley expressed her office’s commitment to locating and enforcing bond obligations of those who flee justice.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Carol E. Head, Chief of the Asset Recovery Unit, handled the bond forfeiture action. Valuable assistance was provided by the United States Marshals Service in Massachusetts and Connecticut.
