SPRINGFIELD, MO – Gabriel Eric Robinson, 32, of Sparta, Missouri, is headed back to federal prison after receiving an 11-year and five-month sentence for trafficking methamphetamine and illegally possessing a firearm. U.S. District Judge M. Douglas Harpool handed down the sentence today, a harsh penalty reflecting Robinson’s repeated criminal behavior and disregard for the law.
The case stems from an incident on August 23, 2021, when a Stone County sheriff’s deputy discovered Robinson unconscious behind the wheel of a black Ford Explorer parked in Reeds Spring. The vehicle, though not running, had the keys in the ignition. A loaded Springfield Armory 9mm pistol lay on the passenger seat, chillingly close to a bag overflowing with methamphetamine. A subsequent search revealed an additional stash of the drug, along with marijuana and $1,674 in cash hidden within the vehicle.
Authorities seized a total of 188.8 grams of methamphetamine, 30 pills containing buprenorphine, and 0.64 grams of a powder cocktail containing tramadol, fentanyl, and methamphetamine from Robinson. The timing of the arrest is particularly damning: Robinson had only been released from prison following a previous drug trafficking conviction a mere two and a half months prior, and was still subject to electronic monitoring via an ankle bracelet.
This wasn’t Robinson’s first rodeo with the law. Court records paint a picture of a career criminal with a lengthy rap sheet. He’s accumulated three prior felony convictions for possession of a controlled substance, two for tampering with a motor vehicle, and further convictions for resisting arrest, unlawful possession of a firearm, receiving stolen property, and theft. Disturbingly, Robinson has a history of fleeing from law enforcement, even engaging in high-speed chases exceeding 100 miles per hour while armed.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jessica R. Eatmon prosecuted the case, building a solid case based on the evidence collected by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Stone County Sheriff’s Department. The investigation highlighted the interconnectedness of drug trafficking and illegal firearms, a dangerous combination that fuels violence and instability in communities like Sparta and beyond.
Robinson’s sentence sends a clear message: those who continue to engage in drug trafficking and wield illegal firearms will face significant consequences. The lengthy prison term, without the possibility of parole, aims to remove a dangerous individual from the streets and deter others from following a similar path.
