Traveon Shaquille Martin, 24, of Garner, is headed to federal prison for more than a decade after being sentenced to 130 months for distributing crack cocaine and illegally possessing a stolen firearm — violence punctuating every stage of his criminal path.
Martin pleaded guilty on October 30, 2017, to four federal charges: Distribution of a Quantity of Cocaine Base and Aiding and Abetting; Distribution of a Quantity of Cocaine Base; Felon in Possession of a Firearm; and Possession of a Stolen Firearm. The crimes stemmed from a controlled buy on October 25, 2016, at the New Bern Mart in Raleigh, where a confidential informant paid $40 for 0.3 gram of crack supplied by Martin, who went by the street name ‘Trigger’ and handed over his phone number for future deals.
Just months later, on April 18, 2017, Martin tried to bolt from Raleigh police who knew he had outstanding warrants. A brutal foot chase ended in a violent struggle — Martin took a fighting stance, slammed an officer in the neck, and fought so hard cops believed he was reaching for a weapon. They tasered him. Stuffed in his waistband: a loaded .38 caliber revolver stolen from a prior crime scene, plus 2 grams of crack and $173 in cash.
The violence didn’t stop behind bars. While locked up at Brunswick County Jail awaiting sentencing, Martin attacked a corrections officer on November 27, 2017. After slapping a food tray from the officer’s hands, Martin launched a full assault — punching the man in the face and head, knocking him down, and continuing the beatdown as the officer lost consciousness. Another inmate tried to intervene until a third inmate attacked him, enabling Martin to keep pummeling the officer.
Charged with felony Assault Inflicting Physical Injury on a Law Enforcement Officer, among other counts, the jailhouse attack became a key factor in Martin’s sentencing. Prosecutors used the incident to push for a harsher sentence, painting Martin as a repeat danger to both public and law enforcement.
Sentenced by Senior U.S. District Judge W. Earl Britt in Raleigh, Martin now faces 130 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release — time bought not just with drugs and guns, but with blood spilled in a jail corridor and on a Raleigh street.
