Garrett Roth, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Louisiana 2020

Gun Violence

Kenner, Louisiana – On February 11, 2020, United States District Judge Susie Morgan handed down a 51-month prison sentence to Garrett Roth, a 27-year-old resident of Kenner, for violating the Federal Gun Control Act.

Roth was charged on August 13, 2018, with possessing a Taurus, 9 mm semi-automatic pistol while being an unlawful user of and addicted to heroin. The case against Roth was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime in communities across the nation.

U.S. Attorney Peter G. Strasser praised the work of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in bringing Roth to justice. Assistant United States Attorney David Haller handled the prosecution of the case.

Roth will serve 51 months in the Bureau of Prisons followed by three years of supervised release. The sentence is a result of Roth’s violation of the Federal Gun Control Act, which prohibits felons from possessing firearms.

The Project Safe Neighborhoods program is an evidence-based initiative aimed at reducing violent crime in communities. Through PSN, a broad spectrum of stakeholders work together to identify the most pressing violent crime problems in the community and develop comprehensive solutions to address them.

Kenner resident Garrett Roth’s sentencing serves as a reminder of the consequences of violating federal gun laws. The Federal Gun Control Act is in place to protect our communities from the dangers of gun violence.
