Justice Department Announces Investigation into Louisiana’s Prisoner Release Practices
The Justice Department has launched a statewide civil investigation into Louisiana’s prisoner release practices, sparking concerns about the state’s ability to ensure timely releases for eligible inmates.
The investigation, which will be conducted under the Civil Rights of Institutionalized Persons Act (CRIPA), will examine the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections’ policies and practices for releasing state prisoners in state and local correctional facilities.
According to the Justice Department, the investigation will focus on practices related to prisoners who are eligible for immediate release, and will be conducted jointly with the U.S. Attorney’s Offices for the Eastern, Middle, and Western Districts of Louisiana.
