A Saline County man has been sentenced to prison for his role in a methamphetamine offense.
David E. Garris II, 36, of Eldorado, Illinois, was sentenced to 132 months in prison for possessing with intent to distribute 39 grams of methamphetamine, announced James L. Porter, Acting United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois.
The conviction stems from a routine traffic stop conducted by the Illinois State Police on March 21, 2015, in Saline County. During the stop, Garris was found to be in possession of the methamphetamine and $4180.00 in cash.
At the time of the traffic stop, Garris was on parole from the Illinois Department of Corrections after being sentenced to 5 years in state prison in 2013 for possessing methamphetamine manufacturing materials in Saline County.
The case was investigated by the Carmi office of the Southern Illinois Drug Task Force and the Illinois State Police and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney James M. Cutchin.
In addition to the 132 month federal sentence, Garris was ordered to pay $300 in fines and special assessments to the United States and was placed on a 3 year term of supervised release to follow his incarceration.
Garris’s sentence is a harsh reminder of the consequences of involvement in the methamphetamine trade and the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to disrupt and dismantle these operations in Southern Illinois.
The United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Illinois commends the Southern Illinois Drug Task Force and the Illinois State Police for their tireless efforts in investigating and prosecuting this case.
