Boston, MA – In a major crackdown on prescription pill trafficking, federal authorities have taken down a Massachusetts man accused of leading a massive scheme to distribute fake and misbranded prescription pills.
Gary Cederquist, a 54-year-old from Worcester, Massachusetts, was arrested and charged with conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, including fentanyl, oxycodone, and alprazolam, after a lengthy investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice.
According to court documents, Cederquist operated a complex network of suppliers and distributors that Funneled the fake pills to customers across the country, often using social media and online marketplaces to facilitate transactions.
The scheme allegedly generated millions of dollars in revenue for Cederquist and his co-conspirators, who used the proceeds to fund their own lavish lifestyles, including purchasing luxury cars and real estate.
Cederquist is being held without bail pending a detention hearing, which is scheduled for later this month. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $1 million.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Vincent J. DeMore, III, Kevin J. Reddington, Christine J. Wichers, and Adam W. Deitch, who are representing the government in the case.
The U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts has scheduled a status conference for later this month to discuss the case further.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Justice said, “The safety of our communities depends on our ability to hold accountable those who seek to profit from the sale of illicit substances. We will continue to work tirelessly to disrupt and dismantle these types of operations.”
