Armed Robber Strikes Twice: Topeka Man Pleads Guilty To Two Violent Crimes
TOPEKA, KAN. – In a brazen display of violence, a Topeka man pleaded guilty in federal court Monday to two armed robberies, including one in which he fired a shot into the ceiling, U.S. Attorney Tom Beall said.
According to authorities, Gary L. Gillom, 30, brandished a firearm while robbing the Arby’s restaurant at 1187 Southwest Gage in Topeka on June 26, 2016. He ordered restaurant employees to hurry with the cash and fired a round into the ceiling of the restaurant.
Gillom also admitted to brandishing a firearm when he robbed the Long John Silver’s restaurant at 2746 Southwest Fairlawn in Topeka on June 27, 2016. The violent crimes were committed just one day apart.
The suspect was arrested on June 29, 2016, after investigators identified a car used in the robberies.
Gillom is set for sentencing on September 11, where he faces a maximum penalty of up to 20 years and a fine up to $250,000 on each count. U.S. Attorney Tom Beall commended the Topeka Police Department, the Kansas Highway Patrol, the FBI, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jared Maag for their work on the case.
The guilty plea comes after co-defendant Darien E. Fulton, 25, of Topeka, Kansas, was sentenced to six years in federal prison.
As the community tries to come to terms with the violent crimes, the Topeka Police Department and other authorities are working tirelessly to ensure that justice is served.
