Leeroy Beck, 29, of Gary, Indiana, pointed a loaded gun at postal workers, forced them into a bathroom, and stole $5,595 in cold cash during a daylight heist at the Tolleston Post Office on August 3, 2017. The brazen robbery unfolded in minutes, but the consequences are now locked in: 96 months behind bars.
Beck pleaded guilty to brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence — specifically, the robbery of a United States Postal employee. U.S. District Court Judge Springmann handed down the sentence in Hammond, Indiana, with no room for leniency. Beck will also serve two years of supervised release upon completion of his prison term.
Court documents lay bare the terror inflicted that day. Armed and demanding compliance, Beck and at least one other suspect stormed the post office, waving firearms in the faces of stunned employees. They were herded into a bathroom like prisoners in their own workplace while the robbers ransacked the premises and made off with the cash.
The FBI and United States Postal Inspection Service launched a joint manhunt that eventually led to Beck’s arrest. Investigators traced evidence, analyzed surveillance footage, and pieced together witness statements to build a case that left little room for dispute. His guilty plea spared victims a traumatic trial, but did not reduce the weight of the sentence.
Beck has been ordered to pay full restitution: $5,595. Though a symbolic figure compared to the emotional toll, it’s a legal demand he cannot ignore. Federal prosecutors made it clear — robbing public servants while armed carries a steep price.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Diane L. Berkowitz and Thomas M. McGrath led the prosecution. U.S. Attorney Kirsch emphasized that attacks on federal employees, especially those involving firearms, will be met with maximum penalties. For Beck, the cost of eight years vanishes next to the damage done in eight minutes.
