SOLDIERS GROVE, WI – Travis Johnson, 32, of Gays Mills, Wisconsin, will spend the next six and a half years in federal prison after being sentenced today to 78 months for possessing methamphetamine with intent to distribute. The bust, originating from a routine traffic stop, highlights the continued flow of hard drugs through rural Wisconsin and the consequences for those who profit from it.
The trouble began on November 10, 2019, when a Crawford County Sheriff’s Department deputy spotted a vehicle – an SUV – careening around the village of Soldiers Grove. The driver, later identified as Johnson, didn’t just drive erratically; he abandoned the vehicle, fleeing on foot. The deputy observed Johnson attempt to conceal himself on the patio of a nearby residence, a pathetic attempt at evasion that quickly failed.
A search of Johnson’s abandoned SUV yielded a cocktail of illicit substances and paraphernalia: several grams of psilocybin mushrooms, a digital scale coated with white residue – undoubtedly from weighing out doses – and the tools of the trade: hypodermic needles and small gem baggies. But the real payload wasn’t in the vehicle; it was hidden where Johnson had first tried to disappear.
Underneath the patio, law enforcement discovered a large plastic bag containing a substantial quantity of methamphetamine – a staggering 162 grams. That’s enough to supply a significant number of users and represents a serious attempt to flood the local market with a dangerous and addictive drug. Johnson, already on extended supervision for prior drug-related offenses, clearly hadn’t learned his lesson.
U.S. District Judge James D. Peterson handed down the 78-month sentence today, sending a clear message that drug trafficking will not be tolerated in the Western District of Wisconsin. Scott C. Blader, the United States Attorney, announced the sentencing, emphasizing the commitment of federal authorities to dismantle drug networks and hold offenders accountable.
The investigation was spearheaded by the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, demonstrating the crucial role local law enforcement plays in combating drug crime. Assistant U.S. Attorney Chadwick M. Elgersma successfully prosecuted the case, securing a conviction and a substantial prison sentence. While this case is closed, the fight against methamphetamine distribution in Wisconsin remains a constant battle.
