Genevra Winton, Fentanyl Distribution Conspiracy, California 2023

Genevra Winton, 51, and Shannon Bargas, 51, both of Fresno, are behind bars, accused of a fentanyl distribution conspiracy that puts lives at risk. A three-count indictment unsealed on March 17, 2023, charges the pair with conspiring to distribute fentanyl, a highly addictive and deadly synthetic opioid.

According to court documents, law enforcement officers executed search warrants at Winton’s residence and elsewhere on March 20, 2023. The search revealed evidence of the duo’s alleged involvement in the fentanyl trade. Bargas was charged with distributing fentanyl pills, a serious offense that carries severe penalties.

Winton, a convicted felon, faces an additional charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm. She was convicted of a felony in 2010 and is prohibited from possessing a firearm, making this charge all the more egregious. If convicted, Winton and Bargas face up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $1 million for the fentanyl distribution conspiracy.

The case is the result of an investigation by FORT, a team focused on investigating fentanyl overdose cases and composed of officers from Homeland Security Investigations, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the Fresno Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Justin J. Gilio is prosecuting the case.

The charges brought against Winton and Bargas are only allegations, and they are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. However, the evidence against them is mounting, and it’s clear that they are a menace to the community.

This case is part of Operation Synthetic Opioid Surge (S.O.S.), a program designed to reduce the supply of deadly synthetic opioids in high-impact areas. The Justice Department announced the creation of S.O.S. in July 2018, and it’s being implemented in the Eastern District of California and nine other federal districts.
