Geoffrey Potts Sentenced for Receiving Child Pornography

Ashland, Ky. – In a disturbing case of child exploitation, Geoffrey Potts, 25, of Flatwoods, Kentucky, has been sentenced to 114 months in prison for receiving child pornography.

Potts’ sentence was handed down on Monday by Chief U.S. District Judge David Bunning, who imposed the maximum penalty under federal law, which requires Potts to serve 85 percent of his prison sentence. Upon his release from prison, Potts will be under the supervision of the U.S. Probation Office for 15 years.

According to his plea agreement, law enforcement received information in March 2024 that a user was downloading child pornography, and linked the user’s IP address with Potts’ residence. A search of Potts’ cellphone revealed numerous images and videos of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct that had been downloaded via the internet. In total, over 219 images and 45 videos of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct were located on Potts’ cellphone.

The investigation was conducted by the FBI, Kentucky State Police, and Ashland Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Erin Roth is prosecuting the case on behalf of the United States.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office prosecuted this case as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to better locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the internet as well as to identify and rescue victims.
