George Jack Smith, PCP and Gun Crime, Maryland 2015

GREENBELT, MD – George Jack Smith, 29, of Burtonsville, Maryland, faced a federal judge’s wrath today after being sentenced to 22 years in prison for his sinister dealings with PCP and firearms.

Sentenced by U.S. District Judge Paul W. Grimm, Smith was also handed five years of supervised release following his conviction on December 7, 2015. The sentence was announced by the United States Attorney for the District of Maryland, Rod J. Rosenstein; Special Agent in Charge Daniel L. Board Jr. of the ATF; and Chief Hank Stawinski of the Prince George’s County Police Department.

Smith’s transgressions began on December 1, 2013, when he attempted to sell PCP outside an apartment complex in College Park. His life took a violent turn when he fired a gun at the occupants of a vehicle as they drove away after brandishing a knife. A bullet from Smith’s firearm shattered glass at the entrance of the apartment building.

Afterward, witnesses spotted Smith entering a taxi that was promptly stopped by law enforcement. A search of Smith’s jacket yielded a vial containing ¾ ounce of PCP, a stolen .380 caliber pistol, and a .38 caliber revolver with five spent rounds. A subsequent search warrant at his residence turned up a third firearm, a .22 caliber revolver.

Smith’s criminal history was no stranger to the law, as he had already faced two felony drug convictions and a conspiracy charge for robbery, all in Montgomery County Circuit Court. As a convicted felon, Smith was barred from possessing firearms or ammunition.

U.S. Attorney Rosenstein commended the ATF and Prince George’s County Police Department for their relentless pursuit of justice. The prosecutors who brought Smith to trial were Assistant United States Attorneys Nicolas A. Mitchell and Kristi N. O’Malley.
