A shocking case of voter fraud has rocked the state of New York, with 62-year-old Shirley Anne Conners, also known as Shirley Anne Faragalli, being arrested and charged with making a false claim to United States citizenship in order to vote.
According to U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul Jr., Conners, a native and citizen of Canada, has been illegally present in the United States since the early 1970s. Despite this, she has managed to vote in over 20 Federal, State, and local elections since 1995, with the most recent being the New York State Democratic Presidential Primary on April 19, 2016.
The charge against Conners carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian J. Counihan, who is handling the case, stated that the defendant’s actions are a serious offense and undermine the integrity of the electoral process.
The investigation that led to Conners’ arrest was conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Enforcement and Removal Operations, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Michael Phillips. The criminal complaint is a result of their hard work and dedication to upholding the law.
Conners made an initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge H. Kenneth Schroeder, Jr. and was released into the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
The case against Conners serves as a reminder that voter fraud is a serious offense and will not be tolerated. The U.S. Attorney’s office and law enforcement agencies will continue to work tirelessly to protect the integrity of the electoral process and ensure that those who break the law are held accountable.
In a statement, U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul Jr. emphasized the importance of maintaining the integrity of the electoral process. He stated that the office will continue to work with law enforcement agencies to investigate and prosecute cases of voter fraud, and ensure that the rights of citizens are protected.
