Defendant Fails to Register as Sex Offender, Lands 21 Months in Prison
George Moriarty, a 55-year-old Worcester man, was sentenced to 21 months in prison and five years of supervised release for failing to register as a sex offender in Massachusetts, according to a federal court in Worcester.
On October 1994, Moriarty was convicted of indecent assault and battery on a child under the age of 14. He was classified as a Level 2 sex offender by the Massachusetts Sex Offender Registry Board.
After moving to New York in 2013 without notifying authorities, Moriarty was arrested in November 2016 on state charges for failing to register as a sex offender in New York.
As a result of Moriarty’s arrest, New York authorities reached out to federal law enforcement in Massachusetts, leading to his indictment in federal court in Boston and subsequent return to Massachusetts.
Acting United States Attorney William D. Weinreb and John Gibbons, United States Marshal for the District of Massachusetts, made the announcement today.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Suzanne Sullivan Jacobus of Weinreb’s Major Crimes Unit prosecuted the case.
The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative designed to protect children from exploitation and abuse.
