Georgia Man Gets 13 Months for ID Theft, Cash Heists
A 30-year-old Georgia man is headed to prison after being sentenced to 13 months for his role in identity theft and bank fraud in West Virginia.
Brandon Rayshawn Watkins, of Douglasville, Georgia, was found guilty of bank fraud for his involvement in unauthorized transactions from accounts at Bayer Heritage Federal Credit Union in New Martinsville.
According to court documents, Watkins obtained the personal identifying information and account numbers for numerous credit union customers, withdrawing cash from those accounts. The loss related to his criminal acts was over $70,000.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer Conklin prosecuted the case on behalf of the government.
U.S. District Judge John Preston Bailey presided over the case, ordering Watkins to pay $70,750 in restitution to Bayer Heritage Federal Credit Union and a personal money judgment of $10,050. He will serve three years of supervised release following his prison sentence.
