A Georgia man was sentenced to 32 months in prison and three years of supervised release for being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Herbert Palmer, 39, of Decatur, Ga., was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Denise J. Casper on May 13, 2021 in federal court in Boston.
Palmer pleaded guilty on Jan. 15, 2021, to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition.
The charges against Palmer stem from a disturbance call at an apartment in New Bedford on Aug. 12, 2020.
Police responded to the call and found Palmer in possession of a folding knife and a firearm magazine loaded with four rounds of .380 caliber ammunition.
Palmer claimed the ammunition belonged to his BB gun, but a witness reported that he had pointed a small black gun at individuals while inside the apartment.
Police searched the apartment and located a Lorcin, Model 380 .380 caliber semi-automatic pistol in a second floor bedroom.
Palmer was convicted in 2010 of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, making him prohibited from possessing firearms and ammunition.
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program that focuses enforcement efforts on violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs to reduce crime.
